Almeria is a Spanish city and municipality, capital of the homonymous province, in the region of Andalusia. It is the nerve center of the Metropolitan Region of Almeria, in the extreme southeast of the Iberian Peninsula and of the tourist region of Almería-Cabo de Gata-Nijar. It is surrounded by the Sierra de Gador to the west, by the north Sierra Alhamilla and to the east the valley and delta of the river Andarax and, beyond, a plain that culminates in the Sierra de Cabo de Gata. Southward, its port and coastline open onto a wide bay on the Mediterranean Sea. With a population of 200,000 inhabitants, it is a municipality of increasing relevance in the economic, cultural and sports fields, and an important communications hub thanks to its remodeled port and international airport . The province of Almería has an average of 320 sunny days per year, and a very low and localized precipitation rate in autumn and spring. The temperatures are very mild, an average between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, and in the long summers of Almería the average rises up to 26 degrees.
